Links -- You've doubtless come across more than your share of buttons, banners and "bots" when you've gone web surfing. I think most services offering you banner exchanges are pretty useless, because in many cases your website is placed into a random list, and you have to hope that your banner pops up on someone's site in order for clicking on. Links, however, are a little different, and much more promising. I love TEXT links especially, because sometimes the banners don't really explain what you will be clicking on.
Let's say you have a banner that says "Traffic Syndicate 25 is here!" with a really nice graphic on it. Okay, we put it up on your site.
Hmmm. Doesn't really do much, does it?
Let's try this: Would you like UNLIMITED TRAFFIC to your website for FREE?
Put that on your site and suddenly people are clicking away. Why? Because the MESSAGE is there. Don't rely on fancy graphical masterpieces if they aren't going to TELL and SELL. You've got to not only catch the user's attention; you've got to tell the user what they can expect. If you insist on dazzling them with banners, then add a little "alt" text message that comes up when the user “mousies” over the link. But it's much easier, and faster-loading to use text. Especially if you run into someone stuck with a 54,000 bps modem...or worse. :)
Opt-in list -- Okay, I'm going to give you some great information that you'd probably have to pay for. :) Aren't I nice? It is so EASY to build your opt-in list; in fact it's easier than you might want to believe. All it takes really is a simple program that runs right in your server. I use something called "Polvero Email List", and you can probably Google for that somehow. It's free to use, easily modified to suit your needs, keeps track of people who subscribe to your list, and allows for easy un-subscribing. What more could you ask for? Just add some appropriate message in your website like: "Would you like to be kept up to date on updates, and receive deals in your email?" Then add a place for their first name and email address. The program runs automatically when your users press the "Submit" or "Subscribe" button. If you want, get a few of your email friends to sign up first. Don't give them any of your spam though; send them out as the messengers. They'll tell two friends, and so on down the line.
But what if you want several hundred, or thousand people in your opt-in list? Ah, there's the secret, right? How much can you end up paying for a good opt-in list? $500, $750, sometimes $1,000 for up to a million addresses? You know what the problem with these shortcuts is? You never know how reliable these lists are. They could be outdated or non-existant, or the person may have opted OUT of the opt-in list. This requires a bit more effort, and it goes back to what we talked about earlier concerning publicity. Again, remember your target market here. Surf a few websites similar to your theme, drop in to the forums, chatrooms, message boards and introduce yourself. Again, DO NOT SPAM.
Let's say you're selling comic books wholesale on your website. Simply say something like: "Hi! I'm Dave and pleased to be among all of you other comic book collectors. I happen to know where to get some great deals on comic books, and I can share a lot of links too! If you're interested, drop me a PM (private message) ok?" You'll get tons of favorable responses. Why? Because you didn't spam and you asked for permission first. :) Before you know it, you'll have hundreds of people joining you, and if your rep is a good one, YOU could be the lucky fellow selling your opt-in list for $1,000. ;)

Publicity -- Well, this is pretty much what we all want for our websites, isn't it? "Information that concerns a person, group, event, or product and that is disseminated through various media to attract public notice", as according to Webster’s Dictionary. Let's think about that for a minute. It is likely that most if not all existing websites are trying to promote a person, group, event or product. You have to decide exactly what you are trying to promote. Then think about ways to let people know what it's all about. The best way to do that is get yourself a 2-page press kit, a sort of introduction you can pass around to various outlets. Many radio and TV stations will be glad to get a fax about a new website in town, and even though they might not always broadcast it, they'll know it's there and will visit -- and probably tell others. Remember what you are trying to get out there, and whom you want to reach. For instance, if you want to sell special home products designed for the elderly, start sending out faxes to all the hospices or elderly care centers in your area. If you want to sell olive oil online, hit the Greek-food stores. If you're introducing a new underground rap artist, hit the rap radio stations, etc. Good publicity means aiming your notices to the exact market you want to reach. Knowing whom you are going to sell to is practically your ace in the hole. Oh, and do not be afraid to approach people! Make flyers, pass them out at your local mall, put them under windshields, and get the word OUT there. :)
